I am always shocked by the negative reactions most people seem to have toward the Book of Ecclesiastes. To me, it is the prize of the Biblical canon. It seems to me there is more realism in Ecclesiastes than all other books of the Bible put together. It is the book that deals with greater clarity than any other the inevitable unsatisfactoriness and transience of life. It is the biblical definition of dukkha, a concept with which any Buddhist would feel instantly at home. The KJV is poetically beautiful, but not so easy for many people to read and understand. Adam Miller's paraphrased text is a terrific substitute in my opinion, and I thank him for it. I've read most of Dr. Miller's publications and have loved every one of them. This one is no exception. The only disappointment for me was the omission of Eccl 12:9-14. Although it may indeed be "...a late scribal addition aimed at softening the book's existential blow," to me this passage puts everything into a Judeo-Christian perspective that is an essential biblical element. Verses 12 and 13 might have been a sufficient denouement: "And further, buthese, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man." In other words, be humble, do good, follow the teachings, and enlightenment will follow.Product details

Loved this. Not a straight paraphrase, but interesting and insightful.
Translating this ancient book into modern language has a jolting feel, not only because the book itself is jolting but also because it comes from an era that lived much closer to the natural world. Miller's incorporation of eastern religious ideas and sensibilities helps this translation to modern language and experiences at the same time that it seems to distance Ecclesiastes from how we have coke to expect Christian scripture to read. This seeming distance from Christianity underscores the message of universality in the title.
Ecclesiastes stubbornly refuses to fit the neatly packaged narrative of supposedly unified bible with a single perspective. It's a great counterbalancing perspective to a Procrustean Deuternomic narrative, and this paraphrase brings it out clearly from the obscurity of King James English into modern English.
a fresh perspective on the book of Ecclesiastics. I did prefer the Rube Goldberg machine book over this one but this book does give further understanding of the mind of Adam Miller and helps to better understand is personality and his personal focus of how he interprets scripture...I'm still trying to figure him out and am enjoying the journey
For a section of the Bible that can be a bit of a downer, Miller has placed a modern spin to highlight the importance Ecclesiastes brings to humanity. While it might leave the reader in a state of hopelessness, through this unique paraphrasing, it also brings hope. Miller has a wonderful way of making something accessible to the reader without dumbing it down. It's worth the hour to read and the hours upon hours of deep thought it brings about later.
Having highly enjoyed Adam Miller's paraphrase and commentary on the book of Romans, I was excited to read this book. I wasn't disappointed! The author did an excellent job of detailing the philosophical and spiritual importance of this book to people of faith. I have a deeper understanding and appreciation of Ecclesiastes because of this book.
Why pick up another thing to read that you've already read before? If nothing is new, why bother. While it can't be new, it can have other wonderful qualities. In this case it is fresh. And though Miller expects us to not like Ecclesiastes, there's a lot to like here, and in a succinct package that invites repeated visits, which is what most of us will require so we can learn to eventually see through the sparkle of language to the emptiness beyond, the darkest abyss we must search into and contemplate to be led unto salvation.
